2012 Melbourne Fringe:
• Lincoln Daw in The Next Superpower

Posted on 02 October 2012

I can’t really review The Next Superpower, since I’m co-writer and director for this show. However, I can encourage you to go see it and tell you a little about what you can expect.

Lincoln Daw contacted me the beginning of August about a show he was planning on doing for Melbourne Fringe Festival. He had just moved down from Sydney and needed help. He had an idea, a show title, and had paid for his place in the festival. What he didn’t have was a script and his show opened in two months.

He had an engaging personality and plenty of fun stories about his life experiences. So, I agreed to pitch in. Given the timeframe I felt my skills would be best applied by helping to get his script in place as fast as possible, then polishing up his performance. Let me say, Lincoln has been a delight to work with.

The Next Superpower is about China’s rise in international standing and what we can expect given Lincoln’s experiences as an English teacher to Chinese kindergartners. Kid stories are almost always funny. Add to that refugee teachers, anxious parents, and a country with peculiar toilet arrangements, and there’s plenty to tickle the funny bone.

It would be great if you could turn up, laugh, and admire the gigantic Chinese flag I had to whip together in less than 2 hours.
