Eugene Mirman was a regular on Flight of the Conchords and Adult Swim’s Delocated, had his own special on Comedy Central, and voices Gene in the animated Fox series Bob’s Burgers.

He has made use of crowdfunding and social media to boost his visibility as a comedian and to found a comedy festival in New York.

You can hear him talk about how to effectively use online tools to boost your comedy (or crafting) career for FREE. And who is sponsoring this event? Etsy! You heard right, the place where you can sell your homemade wares. Good thing I was Christmas shopping the moment I was.

Read about the Almost Internet Famous event, and if you feel inclined, you can RSVP to watch it on Livestream at 10am Friday October 28 (Melbourne time—apologies to those who tuned in October 26 due to a date mixup).

Peace and kindness,

I am currently doing short-term contract work. This means I did not have the funding to produce any of my own shows this year or next year, and that I have to do some fast talking to convince people to let me see shows for reviewing.

The easiest way for me to see much comedy goodness is to receive a festival pass. Then I am free to see any and/or all shows that interest me. The easiest way to get that pass is to help with someone else’s show.

So, I am putting a call out: are you running a show for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and could you use some extra help?

I am a performer in my own right. I did well in the Raw Comedy competition. I’ve done TheatreSports in performance. I have acting training (which I took to help with my playwriting skills). I sing, dance, balloon twist, and am just learning juggling.

I can certainly help with any writing and storytelling tasks.

I’m a respected director. In Adelaide I started being asked to consult with other directors on how to work collaboratively with volunteer actors.

I worked in publicity at University of Washington Press. I was head of marketing for an indie comic company in the US. I still do a lot of electronic media marketing work.

Anyone crazy enough to put on their own shows generally knows about production management. I can do that as well.

I don’t mind doing grunt work. The problem is the Comedy Festival limits to whom they are willing to give passes. So, if you have a task you think I can do that would get me that pass, that’s all I need.

Thank you for your help.

Peace and kindness,

Time Titties is a saucy time travel comedy made in Australia for a multi-national Gen-Y audience. The below is my pitch promo reel in order to drum up production support.

With your help I can turn this madness into reality. Tell your friends about the video and encourage them to pass the word on. If you know of any producers in Australia/Britain/North America who might be interested. Send them my way!

Thank you for your support.

Hello Funsters and Seekers of LOLitanium,

I have done my best to keep up with the blog and pack at the same time. However, this is the last week before M-Day and I’m doing my best to neither explode and leave a greasy brown mess on the boxes, nor implode and disappear into an alternative universe.

I would suggest for last week’s missing Friday exercise, and this week’s inevitably missing Friday exercise, to send jokes to keep me cheered up. The sillier the better. I’ll post my favourites.

Thanks everyone for your patience.

Yes, this doesn’t have a lot to do with comedy, but it’s my blog and my birth-month. Woohoo!

I redeem myself by most of it being silly, like Dr Seuss after a spin dry in a virtual reality machine. I have a poem I plan on taking with me to The Gov in order to check out their open mic night. I want to know what sort of audience they get and how I might fit in. Mostly, I hope it’s fun.

So, here are the details

The Gov Open Mic Night

8pm Wednesday 27 May
59 Port Road, Hindmarsh

I will probably be reading “Will Play for Cheese”.

I ran an animation society for seventeen years. So yes, I am mad for good quality animation. At first I was overjoyed by the upswing in animation production in recent years, fueled largely by the popularity and increasing ease in creating CGI animation. Lately I’ve been a bit dispirited by the sameness of storytelling and artistic style in many of the features being released: too much KAPOW! and not enough genuine heart. Then comes along Mary & Max.

Mary & Max is a story about an unlikely friendship that develops between Mary, a plain little girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne Australia, and Max, an overweight Jewish man with Asperger’s living in New York. Their friendship begins when Mary randomly selects Max’s address from the New York telephone book and starts to write him. Despite their outward differences they find they both share feelings of vulnerability, insecurity, and pleasure in some of the small details of life.

This film is done using the slow process of clay animation where each movement involves making a small adjustment to a clay character then photographing it, then moving it again and taking another photograph, etc, ad infinitum. Hundreds of hand done images are created a day only to produce several seconds of film. The care and artistry shows in this form of film-making. Aardman are famous for it.

What I adore about this film is how lovingly the characters and their relationship is developed. Looking at the script most producers would put it to one side: where are the two major turning points? where’s the building action? where’s the big climax? Mary & Max avoids the formulas and still delivers a perfectly accessible and appealing film.

Mary & Max was chosen to open the Sundance Film Festival and more recently it has been selected for competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2009. Congratulations! Go Aussies!

Peace and kindness,

Katherine
