Writer and Dramaturge
I can help with writing, co-writing, researching, or editing comedy works. I am a published author. My screenplays have won awards. I have written for Nickelodeon Cartoons. I was a post-graduate supervisor in the Professional Writing and Editing Department at RMIT and a lecturer in storytelling for digital media at both RMIT and Victoria University.

Directing and Producing
In South Australia I was a director/producer for both theatrical and film productions, including a feature length film. The Media Resource Centre sent me out as a consultant to help student filmmakers learn how to manage volunteer productions.

Marketing and Publicity
I worked in the publicity department of the University of Washington Press and was head of marketing for indie comic company Miscellania Unlimited. In recent years I helped with arranging photography for Cameron Marshall, poster design for Mick Neven, and publicity for Meg Pee’s show Close to You. I am also a respected expert and professional in electronic media, and can help you with Websites, podcasts, vodcasts, smartphones, and social media.

As well as a great comedian he was recognised as a satirist and social critic. One of his most famous routines is “Seven Naughty Words”. This is an amiable piece that nonetheless makes use of language that is deemed indecent. The broadcast of the routine over radio landed Carlin in the US Supreme Court.

In the 1978 case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation the court held in a 5-4 decision that the govenment is allowed to regulate indecent language on public airwaves. George Carlin’s right to free speech was deemed not to extend to the new media of the era.

Despite the scenario suggested by the routine, the FCC has never maintained a specfic list of prohibited words. However, they claim to have internal (non-transparent) guidelines which sufficiently determine what is and isn’t indecent.

In follow-up rulings the Supreme Court has softened its stance about instances of obscene speech, however they have never over-turned F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation. Free speech continues to be a point of contention in any media other than print press or public declamation (and even that is questionable). The US government is very much into the letter of the law and apparently not the spirit of freedom.

This is why in addition to bodies such as the American Civil Liberties Union or Civil Liberties Australia we also have the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Electronic Frontiers Australia (of which I am a lifetime member). Other countries face similar problems and some have similar bodies. People in power continue to fear words more than weapons and sex more than violence.

In memory of George Carlin and in support of free speech I encourage people to download the “Seven Naughty Words” routine and find places where you can read it publicly with your friends. This could be in a comedy club, a cafe, or even the steps of Parliament.

Those in a position of privilege can abuse that privilege, finding ways to marginalise people for all sorts of reasons. The reasons include race, gender, religion, physical handicap, but can also include weight, attractiveness, social position, etc. It is never fair.

It is up to us to recognise when people are being dehumanised, bullied, silenced, and ostracised from the support and dignity of work. It is then up to people such as comedians to raise awareness. Through comedy we can start creating change toward a more equitable and harmonious society.

Patrick Chappatte is a Swiss political cartoonist who talks about the power cartoons and humour have to create both good and bad in the world.

An insightful panel session looking at the why, wherefores and eternal dreams of perfecting Australian Television comedy.

Television comedy is one of the most difficult program forms to perfect, this panel will discuss through anecdote, analysis and “War Stories”, the often perilous path through concept, script writing, production and marketing of successful Television comedy.

With a stellar cross-generational panel of TV comedy Luminaries; Adam Zwar (Lowdown, Wilfred), Tim Ferguson (DAAS Kapital, Shock Jock, The Cheeky Monkey), Lee Zachariah (The Bazura Project, Hell Is for Hyphenates) and chaired by Marc Gracie (The Adventures of Lano and Woodley, Full Frontal, WTF).

The easiest way for me to see much comedy goodness is to receive a festival pass. Then I am free to see any and/or all shows that interest me. The easiest way to get that pass is to help with someone else’s show.

So, I am putting a call out: are you running a show for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and could you use some extra help?

• I am a performer in my own right. I did well in the Raw Comedy competition. I’ve done TheatreSports in performance. I have acting training (which I took to help with my playwriting skills). I sing, dance, balloon twist, and am just learning juggling.
• I can certainly help with any writing and storytelling tasks.
• I’m a respected director. In Adelaide I started being asked to consult with other directors on how to work collaboratively with volunteer actors.
• I worked in publicity at University of Washington Press. I was head of marketing for an indie comic company in the US. I still do a lot of electronic media marketing work.
• Anyone crazy enough to put on their own shows generally knows about production management. I can do that as well.

I don’t mind doing grunt work. The problem is the Comedy Festival limits to whom they are willing to give passes. So, if you have a task you think I can do that would get me that pass, that’s all I need.

I have done my best to keep up with the blog and pack at the same time. However, this is the last week before M-Day and I’m doing my best to neither explode and leave a greasy brown mess on the boxes, nor implode and disappear into an alternative universe.

I would suggest for last week’s missing Friday exercise, and this week’s inevitably missing Friday exercise, to send jokes to keep me cheered up. The sillier the better. I’ll post my favourites.
